encounters with southeast asian modernism

Shortly after we finished the Encounters with Southeast Asian Modernism project, we received mail from Anna Tostões, Chair of docomomo International. We were asked to contribute to issue 63 of the docomomo journal with a documentation issue in relation to Bauhaus, Modernism, and Tropical Modernity in Southeast Asia, based on the theme, outcome, and future plan of the project. Of course, we gladly accepted the invitation.

Besides the Journal editor, Pedro Guedes (Queensland University, Brisbane) and Johannes Widodo (National University Singapore), who also contributed to the Encounters as part of the curatorial team of the Singapore contribution, were guest editors of the issue.

Following the editorial, “docomomo Journal 63 shows how the cross-fertilization of subjects generated by tropical architecture combine with echoes of the Modern Diaspora to provoke new narratives”.

Docomomo journal 63 is available as pdf on the docomomo website.
