Baunetzwoche #663 – Dipl.-Ing. Arsitek: Fünf indonesische-deutsche Architekturgeschichten
(in German)
In the early 1960s, a group of Indonesian architecture students earned their diplomas at universities in Berlin and Hannover. In 1960 and 1961, they completed their studies—returning to Indonesia shortly afterward, where they would become key figures in shaping the country’s postcolonial architecture. Although their professional paths were deeply rooted in German architectural education, their names remain little known in Germany today.
Baunetzwoche #663 (published in German) highlights five of these architects: Han Awal, Bianpoen, Mustafa Pamuntjak, Soejoedi Wirjoatmodjo, and Suwondo Bismo Sutedjo. Written by Moritz Henning and Eduard Kögel, the issue traces their academic journeys, major projects, and the architectural dialogue between Indonesia and Germany that shaped their work.
This edition follows up on the exhibition Dipl.-Ing. Arsitek. Eine Indonesisch–Deutsche Architekturgeschichte (Dipl.-Ing. Arsitek. An Indonesian–German Architectural History), held at the Technical University of Berlin from 21 November to 18 December 2024, and expands on the transnational legacy of these architects. With historical photographs, archival plans, and detailed commentary, the 28-page publication offers new insights into a little-known chapter of modern architectural history.
