Berlin, Germany

The public symposium will bring the discussion on modernism in Southeast Asia into an intercontinental dialogue. The contributions focus on postcolonial architectural modernism in its respective local articulations, strategies for the preservation and new use of historical buildings, and educational and training concepts with the aim of local knowledge production.

Starting from the exhibition’s main themes, the symposium will address current discourse topics and concrete practical approaches.

Contributors to the symposium will include curators, artists, architects, planners, and scholars from the participating cities who are connected to the exhibition Contested Modernities, as well as additional international participants from several other countries worldwide.
