Post-first world-war focus on social housing in Europe, particularly in Berlin and other major cities, gave architects opportunities to explore new tableaux for modernist landscape associated closely with the living patterns of the new social class. That awareness was first expressed by Singapore Improvement Trust in the 1930s with the experimentation of forms and urban design. With the new Republic, the thrust in public housing was a march towards modernity by the eradication of traditional villages and the creation of a modern living pattern that will promote social and racial harmony.
A professional architectural programme was initiated in Singapore Polytechnic in 1959. Right at the beginning of the Republic, public housing was a vital focus of the government and the newly set up Housing and Development Board managed to complete twice as many units in five years as the total number of units completed under the colonial government.
The objective of Housing Modernities is to explore the architecture of modernism and its role in nation-building and the construction of a Singapore identity. This exhibition is designed with a focus on the theme of public housing, demonstrating the path to modernism that had been inextricably tied up with nation-building, improving the lives of the citizens, and laying the foundation of a post-colonial modernized state.
How can we understand the momentum of the modernist housing programme and what were its implications on the local and regional public housing form and programme? What were the social impacts and modernist outlooks and values arising from the public housing programme?
Based on these questions, the exhibition will explore relevant sub-themes such as master-planning and urban design of new housing estates, architectural form and lifestyle, everyday modernism in community structures for daily needs, and domesticity and life in public housing estate.
